We provide grass fed Scottish Highland Beef, pasture-raised Mangalitsa Pork. Raised responsibly and humanely with special care from birth to finish on our third generation family farm. No antibiotics or hormones.
We chose the hardy and robust Scottish Highland (Hairy Coos) because they bask in the snow, thrive in our cold temps, and eat thistles for breakfast. Their fluffy winter coat and gentle nature made the choice an easy ‘yes’. Our fold started with three registered cows and increased, at one time, to well over sixty. In the beginning we began selling their amazing low fat, lower cholesterol beef to family and friends and have since expanded to a larger market as supply increased.
Mangalitsa, or Mangalica, are a hardy breed of pig noted for their thick and curly hair. Their meat is marbled beautifully and they are often referred to as the Kobe beef of pork. They require more than twice the time to mature than standard breeds but the quality is well worth it. The modern Mangalitsa was developed from older Hungarian stock crossed with pigs of Romania, Serbia, and wild boar. The Mangalica Wikipedia page offers more about them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangalica.
Our horde are free-range, sheltered outdoors year 'round, and have a great life. They like to forage and dig for grubs, becoming woolier the colder it gets. This breed is genuinely curious and engaging, with a mild disposition. Their grazing diet is supplemented daily with grain mash we get from 45th Parallel Distillery, topped with pellets, and also hay in the winter. Additionally, they enjoy veggie and fruit overstock from local farms and stores - plus the occasional bakery treat that’s gone past its sell-by date.
This is where I grew up, then the Keller Dairy Farm, started by my grandparents and passed on to my parents. As a young adult I left the farm and went to college, traveled, and got married, never dreaming Eric and I would return to make this farm our own. But when we moved into my grandparent’s house over thirty years ago, to save some money and pursue our careers, the die was cast. After my parents sold off the dairy cows and started their retirement, we thought maybe getting some llamas and goats would be fun. Fast forward a few decades, and raising three awesome kids, here we are sharing the land with weather-tested cattle, pigs, and more.
